A History of PRM in South Africa

While Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) was first recognized as a medical specialty in the USA in 1947, it has yet to achieve formal recognition in South Africa. However, PRM is a well-established and vital specialty in many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, where qualified PRM doctors, known as physiatrists, play a crucial role in patient care.

Driven by a shared vision to advance the field in South Africa, a group of dedicated doctors working in physical rehabilitation centers across the country came together to form SASPRM in 2018. This marked a significant step towards building a strong foundation for PRM in South Africa and advocating for its recognition as a distinct medical specialty.

What do PRM Doctors Do?

We care for individuals after injuries, those with cognitive and/or physical disabilities, chronic or complex conditions.

We manage and support the clinical and psychological needs of each patient including, the specific problems arising from their presenting condition.

Early and continuous, tailored treatments and interventions can prevent complications, reduce long-term disability, and support overall well-being.

How Do PRM Doctors Do It?

By comprehensively addressing all impairments – on a ward round, or in the out-patient setting. By promoting rehabilitation, individuals can regain their ability to perform daily activities, participate in social roles, and maintain a higher standard of living.

Ensuring widespread access to these services is essential for creating a healthier, more inclusive and productive society
