Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM)
Physical rehabilitation is crucial for enhancing the quality of life and functional independence for individuals with impairments – whether temporary or permanent.

A History of PRM in South Africa
While Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) was first recognized as a medical specialty in the USA in 1947, it has yet to achieve formal recognition in South Africa. However, PRM is a well-established and vital specialty in many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, where qualified PRM doctors, known as physiatrists, play a crucial role in patient care.
Driven by a shared vision to advance the field in South Africa, a group of dedicated doctors working in physical rehabilitation centers across the country came together to form SASPRM in 2018. This marked a significant step towards building a strong foundation for PRM in South Africa and advocating for its recognition as a distinct medical specialty.
